Security breach

rich/ April 21, 2007/ World/

On the subject of farm subsidies and government oversight (or lack thereof), it was just announced that 63,000 people have had their personal information posted on a website that tracks government payments. Lucky us, it looks like we’re on the list.

It shouldn’t be a big deal, since we have the farm incorporated as a LLC. We did this for several reasons, but one of them was as a privacy firewall against just this kind of event. Thus, our social security numbers are not included in the list, just our business ID.

When you sign the papers, you accept that the fact that you get payments becomes public knowledge…I don’t have a problem with that, but this event is another sign of a failing government that basic privacy controls were overlooked. Your tax dollars at work, paying for credit reporting.

Update: It turns out we weren’t on the list of compromised accounts. Whew, dodged that bullet.
