Junk food

I’ve been off of posting about the turmoils in the grain market; now that you can get the info on CNN, I’ll leave it to the big media to continue to cover yesterday’s stories…

Except for this one (4 min video) . The high price of feed has cattle feedlots sweeping out the factory floor of M&M/Mars, desperate for anything with some energy value in it to fatten their animals.

The video also has an interesting comparison to a grassfed cattle ranch. Unfortunately, that farmer is also feeling some financial pinch, but his prices (30% over the factory beef) aren’t really reflecting the high value of his product. I’d also question whether a farm of 100 animals really needs the monster tractor that they show him with…

  1. Thanks Rich for that post. I can’t believe what they are feeding those cows! Chocolate by-products. Unbelievable. We’ve been feeling the grain prices lately — went to pick up a ton of organic poultry feed the other day — $718 bucks! Needless to say, we could only afford half a ton. Nutso. We are about to slaughter the whole laying flock. We are finding it is too expensive on a small-scale…didn’t you guys already figure that one out?
